Abstract:

This article aims to examine an ecclesiology presented in the theology of German theologian and martyr, Dietrich Bonhoeffer(1906- 1945). In particular, it focuses on Bonhoeffer's approach and interpretation on church as a community of communion which follows the spirit of Jesus Christ. Bonhoeffer's ecclesiology can be defined as a relational one. In his understanding, the church exists in a communal fellowship consisting of the body of Christ. The self and the other, this world and the other world, individuality and communion, and the deep rupture of suffering and glory, form a new relationship by realizing the body of Christ as church. This study pays particular attention to the fact that Bonhoeffer's relational ecclesiology evidently offers unique insight into the nature of church, which faces the challenges of our time and new civilization. Therefore, this research is to suggest the true characteristics and coming tasks of contemporary church through Bonhoeffer's relational ecclesiology.
