Abstract:

The thoughts Gregory Bateson (1904-1980) have been creatively stimulating the approach on the problem of mind and ecology. This study is an attempt to rediscover the meaning of Gregory Bateson's theory of Eco-Religion through his works. The terms "Religion" or "religious" do not frequent his works, but stand as a significant element of the flow of his thoughts. Religion had been increasing becoming important as a key term, especially in his late thoughts. However, his definition on Religion does not direct to the traditional meaning of it. It rather sheds light on it from the perspective of Ecological Communication and the horizon, which goes beyond the limits of consciousness and the epistemology of the sacred. Thus, for him religion is linked to the immutable nature of the foundation of all living creatures. This study tries to unfold the new meaning that Bateson gave religion - which is different from the historical and institutional religions familiar to us.

This paper tries to elaborate on how Bateson built up his terminological perception of religion based on meditative biological and anthropological understanding and attempts to determine the meaning of his new way of epistemology of the sacred, which throws new ideas on the current discourse. In order to accomplish as mentioned above, this study is 1. Examining his understanding of "the pattern of the living things", which composes the core element of his thoughts, 2. Examining the "concrete state of religion" based on his understanding of the logics of life and the rationale of the mind, 3. Examining the meaning of "religious communication", 4. Examining the value of religion from the background of the sacredness of life and eternal truth. At last, 5. Examining the contribution towards the current understanding of religion.
