Abstract:

Rev. Dr. Manu Song Chang-Keun(1898.10.5-1950.8) was one of the most important theologians and pioneers in the 20th history of the Korean church. His life and thought contributed greatly to the development of the building of the theological education and the formation of Chosun Theological Seminary (Hanshin University) in Korea. In addition, his very new and innovative thoughts and active participation show a paradigm for the improvement of the temporary Korean theology of his time. This article investigates the development of Manu¡¯s understanding of the church and its ecclesiological implications for the Korean society. Manu understands the church from the perspective of the integration of inner faith with a ¡°Holy Poverty¡± in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. He defines the identity of the church as deeply rooted in the hope and witness to the Gospel. How this aspect of his ecclesiology and the new reformation of the churches enlightens our self-understanding of the Korean churches today is the focus of this article. Manu¡¯s thoughts and concepts could be a significant contribution and provide new insights towards the shaping of a new Korean church in 21th century.
