종교와 신 관념은 인간 문명에 어떠한 의미를 지니는가. 종교와 신에 대한 인간의 관념은 인간 문명을 어떻게 견인하고 추동하는가. 본 연구는 화이트헤드의 형이상학을 기반으로 전개된 종교론과 신론의 문명론적 의미를 해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 화이트헤드는 종교를 이 세계의 궁극적 본성에 대한 타진으로 이해하였다. 그에게 종교는 고양된 세계의식이다. 화이트헤드는 중세와 근대의 사상적이며 문명적인 위기를 다양하게 진단하였다. 특히 본 연구는 중세와 근대 문명의 위기와 그 해법을 화이트헤드 신론의 관점에서 성찰하고자 한다. 특히 화이트헤드가 시대의 위기를 자신의 종교론과 신론의 재구성을 통하여 어떻게 비평하고 극복하려 하였는지를 밝히고자 한다. 화이트헤드의 종교론과 양극성적 신론은 오늘날 현대의 철학 뿐만 아니라 신학에게도 많은 영향을 주었다. 본 연구는 화이트헤드의 종교론과 신론이 21세기 현대사회와 문명에 어떠한 유용한 전망을 주는지를 해명할 것이다. 이를 통하여 본 연구는 종교의 위기의 시대에 종교와 문명의 긴밀한 상호 대화를 위한 하나의 토대를 마련하고자 한다.

Publisher:Center for Religious and Cultural Studies Abstract: What to the terms religion and God mean to the human being? Or: how do these terms drive the human civilization towards a renewal? This study attempts to interpret the meaning of theory of religion and theism to the civilization based on the understanding of Alfred North Whitehead’s metaphysics. Whitehead regarded religion as the ultimate approach to the world’s nature. For him, religion was an edified world-consciousness. Whitehead variably examined the crisis civilization and its solution of the middle and modern ages. Hence, this study intents to reflect on the crisis of civilization of the middle and modern ages from the perspective of Whitehead’s theism. A special focus is given to the suggestions of Whitehead on how to reflect on and overcome these crises. Whitehead’s theory of religion and theism deeply influenced theology, as well as temporary philosophical thinking. This study sheds light on the positive outlook on the 21st century’s civilization of Whitehead’s theory of religion and theism. Through these attempts, this study is trying to lay the foundation of a dialogue among religion, civilization and universe in an age of crisis of religion.
