Synchronicity and Information
Author: spanky@ediblebrain.com

Sometimes (actually VERY often) things will appear at the same (or close to the same) time that have everything to do with each other. Like I'll pick up the phone to call someone and they're on the phone already, having called me! Or (this recently happened) I'll think "I'm gonna find 5 bucks on the ground as I leave this theater" and I do. Or I'm reading about or thinking about something and suddenly it's all over the place. It's called "synchronicity." It's a phenomenon recognized by many of science and psychology, some calling it "coincidence" and some having a variety of explanations for it.
It has been said that all things are energy. That if you go past the molecule, past the atom, past the protons, neutrons, etc., it's ALL energy. Could energy be made up of something even more abstract, more difficult to imagine?

If all things are energy then how do you describe information? I can transfer a thought from my head to your head (I'm doing it now) through thousands of means. By the time you read this, I probably won't be thinking about this. But you will. This has formed as a thought in my head, a thought built on the thoughts of all that has influenced me. My influences are all of my ancestors from the beginning of time (is there such a thing?), all that I've read (and all those that wrote what I've read and all that's influenced those that wrote what I read, etc.), all the people I've known or have known of (and all that influenced them, etc.), all the events I've witnessed, senses I've experienced, meals that I've eaten, etc. etc. etc.... You get the picture. Then I somehow took all that information and added something to it (the evolution of information), then I wrote it out with a language that evolved since the dawn of man on a computer that reads it as a series of algorithms. Those get translated to binary, sent through the Internet, picked up and translated back to a visible language that you are now reading. You receive this information via light waves (particles?) from your monitor, through your eyes, into your brain, where you understand the language and piece together the abstract ideas, adding it to all of your own influences and making it unique to you. Whew!!! That could have been a lot longer but I think it gets the point across.

There is this theorem that when two particles are joined they forever become a part of one another. And if those particles were to separate and one thing happens to that particle, then the other particle would react to it instantly, even if they were light-years apart!!! One guy's theory on this (Bell's) is that the universe is made up of INFORMATION! Information is intangible and therefore needs not worry about the laws of physics. This would explain ESP. Everyone on earth (and everything) shares some of the same cosmic dust that began this world. But you share even more particles with those you truly sympathize with (love). Mothers often know if something is wrong with their child the instant that it happens no matter how far away that child is! Information!

The fact that you can see a star or talk over the phone or tell what kind of animal a fossil tooth belonged to or read this now is due to information. You could argue that it's all energy transfer (light reflects from object, eye accepts light, mind interprets light) but that doesn't explain ESP or instant particle information transfer. Or synchronicity.

Energy can't travel faster than the speed of light (at least by today's physics, you could argue with Stephen Hawkings, Carl Sagan, and Einstein if you like), so to say that you suddenly know the instant that something happens to a loved one is to say you know faster than the speed of light. The theory that a particle once associated with another will react to something happening to the other instantaneously, even if light years apart, shows that something more than energy is happening. What is matter made up of? Energy! Things that appear solid to us are just organized energy. So what makes up energy? Perhaps information. Things can't exist without information. A plant has the information it needs to photosynthesize. A rock has the information it needs to be a rock! Our DNA is the most complicated software in the universe, packed with information that decides if we're going to be black or brown or tall or short or human or fish. Information surrounds us! So maybe information is all that makes up the universe. If this is so, then we could learn to use that information, manipulate it, and all things are possible. Like ESP.

When I found the five-dollar bill on the ground, did I create it in my mind? Did I just know it would be there? Or did I "think" someone in the past to drop the bill as I anticipated finding it? Some say that this Deja-Vu experience is the sub-conscience mind receiving information a moment before the conscience mind, making it appear to be a memory. But I had a clear picture of a five-dollar bill on the floor of the theater before I rose from my seat. I stepped over it first and then realized that it was the money I had imagined. I've experienced this phenomena many times, often without acknowledging it. I'm sure you have as well.

So you know what I mean when I say "synchronicity," here's Webster's definition:

Synchronicity: syn-chro-nic-i-ty / Pronunciation: si[ng]-kra-'ni-sa-tE, sin- Function: noun / Date: circa 1889 -1 : the quality or fact of being synchronous -2 : the coincidental occurrence of events and especially psychic events (as similar thoughts in widely separated persons or a mental image of an unexpected event before it happens) that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality -- used especially in the psychology of C. G. Jung
